There are numerous explanations. People could be covetous --keen to impress others with their own thoughts, tales, and ideas (and not even think to ask questions). Maybe they're apathetic--they do not care enough to ask, or they anticipate being bored by the answers they'd hear. They may be overconfident in their own knowledge and believe they know the answers (which sometimes they do, but usually not). Or perhaps they fear that they'll ask the wrong question and be viewed as rude or incompetent. However, the biggest inhibitor, in our view, is that most people simply don't know how beneficial good coughing could be. When they did, they would end much fewer paragraphs with a time --and more with a question mark. Recent research shows that asking questions achieves both. Alison and Harvard colleagues Karen Huang, Michael Yeomans, Julia Minson, and Francesca Gino scrutinized thousands of natural conversations among participants who have been getting to know one another, either in online chats or about in-person rate dates.

The researchers told a few folks to ask many questions (at least nine in 15 minutes) and others to ask very few (no more than four in 15 minutes). In the internet chats, the individuals who have been randomly assigned to ask many questions were better liked by their conversation partners and heard more about their partners' interests. By way of instance, when quizzed about their spouses' preferences for activities such as reading, cooking, and exercising, high question askers were prone to be able to guess correctly. Among the speed daters, people were willing to go on another date with partners who requested more questions. In reality, asking just one more question on each date supposed that participants convinced one extra person (over the course of 20 dates) to go out together again. Questions are such powerful tools that they may be beneficial--perhaps particularly so--in circumstances when question inquiring goes against societal norms.

For example, prevailing norms tell us that job applicants are expected to answer questions through interviews. When interviewees concentrate on selling themselves, they will likely forget to ask questions--about the interviewer, the company, the work--that will make the interviewer feel more engaged and more inclined to view the candidate favorably and may help the candidate predict if the job will provide satisfying work. For job candidates, asking questions like"What am I not asking you that I should?" Can indicate proficiency, build rapport, and uncover key pieces of information concerning the position.
